To achieve the Level 4 Certificate, learners must complete 21 core units and a choice of 15 optional units to reach a total of 36 credits.
This qualification will be suitable for teachers in an associate role who teach predominantly in at least one of the following ways:
- On a one-to-one basis
- From pre-prepared materials where the associate teacher has not been responsible for the design of those materials
- A programme restricted to a particular level, subject or type of learner and where the associate teacher does not deliver or develop across a full range of a curriculum.
The Certificate comprises of 4 modules the first of which was the PTLLS. There is also a requirement of 30 hours of teaching practice. Teaching practice may be paid or voluntary.
The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training has been designed to prepare trainee teachers to teach in a wide range of contexts and develop practical teaching skills. Topics covered include:
- the delivery of teaching or training
- planning to meet the needs of learners
- assessing learners
- using resources in education and training.
The Certificate can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers, including:
- individuals who are not currently teaching and training, but who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification
- individuals who are currently teaching and training, including those who have just begun teaching and training, and who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements of the qualification
- individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a teaching qualification.

How Will You Be Assessed
You will be assessed through ongoing assignments that will take place throughout the programme and you will also be observed during your teaching practice, twice by a tutor and once by your mentor.
Duration and Start Date
You can enrol at any time of the year. The course will be flexible to meet learners’ needs; days, evening and weekends. The programme will take 1 year to complete.

All of your assignments are completed and stored online and, as such, can be accessed from any venue with access to the internet. This means you can complete your award from work or home.
Our assessors recognise that each candidate is unique and plan person-centred progress throughout with regular access to a personal-assessor. This is ideal for those who are nervous, or who have not completed formal education for a while, or who are just simply busy.
Course Entry Requirements
Candidates must have successfully achieved the Level 3 Award in Education & Training (Formerly PTLLS) prior to continuing with study on the Level 4 Certificate programme or complete the Level 3 Award in Education & Training (Formerly PTLLS) as a mandatory unit as part of the Level 4 Certificate. New entrants to Teacher Education programmes must possess a Level 3, or equivalent, qualification as a minimum in their own subject area.
It is also a mandatory requirement that trainee teachers have a subject mentor to offer subject specific support and guidance. Subject mentors must be prepared to attend an initial training session. (This does not apply to Level 3 Award in Education & Training, formally PTLLS). Candidates must complete a diagnostic assessment at the outset in literacy and numeracy and reach Level 2 standard ideally prior to the start of the course. We therefore recommend that you undertake this diagnostic as soon as possible, to ensure that there is sufficient time to complete.
